White Privilege Conference 7 University of Missouri - St. Louis, MO, April 26-29, 2006
ARSJ collaborated with F.O.R. T.R.O.Y (Families Overcoming Recidivism - Transforming and Restoring our Youth) to lead an advanced workshop at the Seventh Annual White Privilege conference in St. Louis, MO. The workshop, entitled "Fighting the Privilege - Collaborative Initiative for Youth Empowerment," described how the two groups developed their critical consciousness and moved to collaborative social action.
The workshop was given to a packed session with a group of educators, therapists, and students who were diverse in age, race, class and sexual orientation.
The workshop consisted of:
The men of F.O.R. T.R.O.Y. sharing how the two groups came together
Two members of ARSJ describing how power and control impact all of our relationships
The men of F.O.R. T.R.O.Y. used film clips from the movie House of Spirits to facilitate an engaging session on how power, privilege and oppression impacted the realtionships in the movie
Finally, the men of F.O.R. T.R.O.Y. led an interactive excercise where the entire audience had the opportunity to locate themselves on the Hierarchy of Power, Privilege and Oppression
Overall, the session was a huge success with all participants staying an extra half hour to continue the conversations.
